Blizzard announced today, in front of a live crowd of over 25,000 BlizzCon attendees and many watching online, Overwatch, a pick-up-and-play first person shooter that’s set in an all new universe full of unique and entertaining characters.
Overwatch takes place in a technologically advanced, highly stylized world. An international task force comprised of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch has been brought in to stop a global crisis. After restoring peace to the war-torn world, Overwatch disbanded, but the world it left behind still required heroes.
Overwatch has a strong emphasis on accessibility and fun, bringing Blizzard’s classic easy-to-learn, hard-to-master gameplay to a new genre – FPS. Games will be comprised of six players, each choosing a hero of their choice and battling across a range of futuristic locations.
“Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay. With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favourite aspect of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.” Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard said.
You can sign up for the beta here, and Blizzard have promised that like their other games, throughout Overwatch’s lifespan they’ll constantly add new heroes and maps into the foray for players to enjoy.
The Overwatch Beta will be out in 2015.
