Riot Games has revealed that League of Legends esports has officially become a recognised sport at Unigames here in Australia.

Unigames is Australia’s largest multi-sport event series for Uni student-athletes managed by Australian University Sport. The organisation attracts more than 15,000 student athletes and features over 39 sports which now includes League of Legends.

“This is an exciting time for League of Legends players as esports becomes more widely recognised as a competitive sport. We can’t wait to see university teams across Oceania compete and show off their skills,” said Daniel Ringland, Head of esports at Riot Games Oceania.

“The student engagement opportunities that result from the rapidly increasing popularity of esports across campuses in Australia has certainly grabbed our attention. Australian University Sport is keen to promote student experience through the League of Legends platform as yet another means of expanding our reach to broader campus communities,” said Don Knapp, CEO of Australian University Sport.

This is great news for the League of Legends scene and especially esports in general becoming a recognised sport. For more information on the League of Legends University Games – check here.
