PlayStation 4’s 4.00 System Update is out today – here’s all you need to know

The next major system software update for Sony’s PlayStation 4, version 4.00, will be available to download and install from later today.

The new update brings with it a slew of changes, with a refreshed system UI, Folder organisation, updates to the Quick Menu and Share Menu, and Library improvements among the most notable.

Quick Menu – Music
Several new items have been added to the Quick Menu, with an enhanced music section now included, allowing you to control the Spotify app without having to open the app.

You’ll be able to play, pause, skip, shuffle, repeat, and save songs from the Quick Menu, as well as having the ability to discover recommended playlists for the game you’re playing and view saved Spotify playlists and songs. Further, when playing a playlist, you’ll be able to see all upcoming songs and choose to play them all, or, alternatively, select an individual song to listen to from that playlist.

PlayStation 4 Pro Updates
A handful of features have been implemented for the PlayStation 4 Pro (launching November 10), including:

  • 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices
  • 1080p streaming for Share Play
  • 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube
  • 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch

High Dynamic Range (HDR)
Last week it was announced that all PlayStation 4 systems would be HDR capable, and version 4.00 will enable this. You’ll be able to see HDR settings in the Video Output Settings area of the PlayStation 4 system, though Sony has said you’ll be ready to enjoy “HDR gaming and entertainment content once it’s available on any PS4 system you own.” Similarly, you’ll need a HDR compatible display to make use of the function, too.

What’s New
The main social screen for the PlayStation 4 has been redesigned and now “includes more information about what your friends have been doing on PS4.”

Content Info Screen
A similar redesign has also been given to the content info screen, which can be accessed by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen.

Data Transfer to New PS4
If you decide to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 Pro or another PlayStation 4, you can now do that via a wired LAN connection. You can transfer games, user info, and saved data from one console to another with this method, though it’s worth mentioning you can still re-download content and transfer saves through the cloud if necessary.

That’s all of the notable new features attached to the PlayStation 4’s new system software — it’ll be available sometime today for Aussie users.
