Round 8 served up some big upsets in the E-League this week, with Sydney FC finally falling and Melbourne City’s Marcus Gomes just scraping an aggregate win. Here’s everything that went down!

PlayStation 4 Division

Match 1: Melbourne City’s Marcus Gomes vs Central Coast Mariners’ Kiran Gupta (KyrenFIFA)
Result: 4-2

A great opening match saw Melbourne City’s Marcus Gomes take first blood against the Central Coast Mariners, as he fills in across both platforms this week. It was goals galore here, and Marcus Gomes rightly took the win after an entertaining contest against King Gupta.

Match 2: Melbourne Victory’s Mouad Zwed (MuadZwed) vs Wellington Phoenix’s Christian Bartolillo (Fweshest)
Result: 2-0

After an excellent performance from Fweshest last week, the tables were turned as Melbourne Victory’s MuadZwed — who, like Marcus Gomes, is playing across both platforms this round — took out a very solid win, setting himself up for a good chance at nabbing his first aggregate win in the second leg.

Match 3: Western Sydney Wanderers’ Rick Tran (RDOUBLETTT) vs Brisbane Roar’s Dino Flocco (Ol_Mate_)
Result: 4-0

Western Sydney Wanderers’ RDOUBLETTT played exceptionally well here, consistently taking the fight to Brisbane Roar’s Ol_Mate_ — who has struggled for form since the competition’s beginning — and capitalising on mistakes to grab a huge victory for his side.

Match 4: Sydney FC’s Samer Elbadar (Samer96_) vs Adelaide United’s Zachary May-Burgess (vDreamz-Shooter)
Result: 0-4

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, Sydney FC’s Samer96_ capitulated against Adelaide United’s vDreamz-Shooter. A rough match for the Sky Blue man was capped off when he conceded an El Tornado against vDreamz in the 52nd minute, eventually leading to the team’s biggest defeat in the league so far.

Match 5: Newcastle Jets’ Bohdan Ling (BLFifa) vs Perth Glory’s Peter Saisanas (Saisanas)
Result: 3-3

Another entertaining game saw two very well matched opponents go at each other tooth and nail, with the match ending square after all was said and done.

Xbox One Division

Match 6: Melbourne City’s Marcus Gomes vs Central Coast Mariners’ Matthew Camilleri (StrawHat Camels)
Result: 0-1

Once again, we were treated to another big surprise this round as Marcus Gomes — on his preferred console, no less — was defeated by Central Coast Mariners’ StrawHat Camels. That said, the Central Coast man played out of his skin to keep hold of the result, and he’d feel disappointed to not have got anything out of the round after Melbourne City won by a goal on aggregate.

Final Result: Melbourne City win 4-3 on aggregate.

Match 7: Melbourne Victory’s Mouad Zwed (MuadZwed) vs Wellington Phoenix’s Justin Josevski (Justmanutd12)
Result: 3-4

Finally, Victory have got a win! After seven rounds of coming close and just missing out via aggregate results, MuadZwed — on his lonesome, as well — pulled out the aggregate win even with a loss to Phoenix’s Justmanutd12. He certainly deserves the result, and it should give the Victory man a good amount of momentum going into the final round of league competition.

Final Result: Melbourne Victory win 5-4 on aggregate.

Match 8: Western Sydney Wanderers’ Joseph Nassar (OhNoAGoat) vs Brisbane Roar’s James Williams (iCripsy)
Result: 1-3

After a slew of average results, Brisbane Roar’s Cripsy finally showed his skill this week, beating out Western Sydney Wanderers’ OhNoAGoat. That said, the 3-1 win wasn’t enough to overturn the 4-0 loss his teammate Ol_Mate_ suffered against Wanderers’ RDOUBLETTT, and the Red & Black take the aggregate win.

Final Result: Western Sydney Wanderers win 5-3 on aggregate.

Match 9: Sydney FC’s Samer Elbadar (Samer96_) vs Adelaide United’s Jamie O’Doherty (FUTWIZ Jamie)
Result: 3-2

After a disappointing result in the PlayStation 4 division, Sydney FC’s Samer96_ pulled off an excellent victory against Adelaide United’s FUTWIZ Jamie. That said, and much like the game prior, it wasn’t enough to conjure up an aggregate result for his side as Adelaide win 6-3 on aggregate. The Sky Blues finally fall in the E-League!

Final Result: Adelaide United win 6-3 on aggregate.

Match 10: Newcastle Jets’ Dane Crow (Bossierhickory8) vs Perth Glory’s David Cook (HighFly357)
Result: 0-2

Perth Glory’s HighFly357 finally showed something he hasn’t for quite some time in this competition — consistency. He didn’t concede any goals, and with the scores tied following a 3-3 draw in the PlayStation 4 leg, he capitalised on some fantastic attacking play to grab a clean 2-0 win against Newcastle Jets’ Bossierhickory8.

Final Result: Perth Glory win 5-3 on aggregate.

Goal of the Round: Adelaide United’s Zachary May-Burgess (vDreamz-Shooter) – Ronaldo
Could it have been anything else? We’ve been waiting for it for the entirety of the league competition so far, and it didn’t disappoint! In the 52nd minute, and with a 1-0 lead in the contest, Adelaide’s vDreamz-Shooter pulled off a cracking El Tornado on the edge of the box to make it 2-0 against Sydney FC’s Samer96_ — well played!

Player of the Round: Melbourne Victory’s Mouad Zwed (MuadZwed)
Player of the round this week goes to Victory’s MuadZwed, after he finally managed to nab his team the 3 points on aggregate after a very tough beginning to the competition. He’s been without teammate Mitch Austin for the last three rounds, and it’s been up to him to do the heavy lifting across both consoles. Funnily enough, he’s been closer to winning those legs without Austin, and in round 8 he finally managed it.

Game of the Round: Sydney FC’s Samer Elbadar (Samer96_) vs Adelaide United’s Zachary May-Burgess (vDreamz-Shooter)
Talk about pulling off the unthinkable! With Sydney FC sitting pretty at the top, most were expecting a fairly even contest between Sydney FC’s Samer96_ and Adelaide’s vDreamz-Shooter, even though the former was playing on a platform he wasn’t entirely familiar with. Yet vDreamz played well from the offset, and really took it to Samer96_. It wasn’t long before goals started to go in, and an El Tornado on the 52nd minute was more or less the nail in the coffin for the Sky Blues in this one. A cracking match, here!

With just one round left, everything is to play for in the E-League. Melbourne City could still grab top spot if Sydney FC lose again, while Central Coast Mariners will be fighting for second spot. With finals looming, players will be looking to put on a fine show next week as we look ahead to what promises to be a cracker couple of weeks coming up.

You can catch all of the E-League action from 7pm AEST every Thursday via Twitch or through FOX Sports’ streaming hub online.
