It has been a big month for new anime as the summer season begins. We have a look at two of the mecha anime series that has begun and give a quick run-down.

Gundam Reconguista in G

Created by the original Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, the mecha series that has been loved for centuries is back with Gundam Reconguista in G (wow what a mouthful). The new series takes place in the future from the original Gundam series where a young Capital Guard member named Bellri Zenam discovers a mysterious (and highly advanced) Mobile Suit named G-Self.

Despite being a new anime, Gundam G really sticks with it’s nostalgic look which honestly looks quite dated for today’s viewers. However, if you could see past that – Gundam G provides quite an intricate plot with almost a mech battle in every episode so far. Mech battles is what we want and every episode delivers. Bellri, as a character pretty much gets over-excited with everything he touches which in turn provides quite a comedic layer over most of the series so far while the plot still retains quite a dark tone.

Gundam G has been impressive so far with each episode delivering a balanced level of story and action without any filler. Let’s hope the story doesn’t get too far-fetched.

Must Watch: B+

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo

Violent and rude – Cross Ange has to be one of the most questionable anime in recent times finishing off the first episode with a rather provoking rape scene. It’s the Sword Art Online finales all over again! Yes a rape scene, tons of nudity and the most violent battles ever! However, looking past all of that – Cross Ange is a rather good anime.

Cross Ange follows princess Angelise destined for greatness in a magical nation where people use mana to deal with everyday life. She lives the high class royal life with everything paid for her and the people respecting her. In the magic nation however, people who don’t wield the power of mana become outsiders and become detained and deported. Even our beloved princess looks down on them. However things start to turn upside down when the world finds out the princess doesn’t have the ability to use mana, she was deported, tortured and sent to the front lines where Norma (beings without mana abilities) must fight against dragons using mechanised suits.

The character progression and battle scenes really makes Cross Ange a must watch mecha anime. From a rather unlikeable character who becomes the heroine to dragons versus mech suits – Cross Ange delivers on those fronts… a great show if you can look past the copious amount of fan service.
