After the launch of YouTube Gaming yesterday and the rise of capturing and sharing gameplay, we’ve decided to put this handy equipment guide for capturing console gameplay. There are plenty of options in the market available and we’ve picked out the different hardware you need to get started.

Recording Console Gameplay:

Current generation consoles offer the ability to share your gameplay clips and screenshots on the fly but are limited in size and quality. While they’re ok for sharing a quick gameplay clip with friends and family – these are not ideal for content creation (or streaming). There are a few brands and options for capturing console gameplay off the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but there’s only one we recommend.

Elgato HD60 Game Capture

The Elgato HD60 Game Capture device is probably the best piece of hardware you can buy on the market that’s an external option. The unit is small and portable which makes it easy to setup as well. The device utilizes a HDMI pass-through capture which records at 1080p 60fps. We use this to capture our footage in the office and can’t stress how awesome it is. You can check out our review here.

Capturing Audio:

There’s several ways to capture audio but only two methods we recommend. Audio quality is important and often pricey when you want the best. Here’s two different gear we recommend for capturing audio for your gameplay.

Sennheiser G4ME Headsets

Sennheiser make quality audio gear and the G4ME headset range utilizes possibly the best microphone on an all-in-one ‘gaming’ headset setup. No need for external microphones as this package gives you great sound and superb microphone quality.

Razer Seiren

If you have a gaming headset already and don’t want to fork out for another one – the Razer Seiren is the next best option. The microphone has been designed intended for capturing studio-like audio for a reasonable price. Razer knows its market and audience which led to the design of this product. It also has an in-built headphone amp which helps boost quality of your existing headsets/headphones as well.

Capturing Yourself:

If you want to feature yourself in the videos like let’s plays and don’t want to fork out on a professional camera then there’s only one product we recommend.

Logitech C920 Webcam

The Logitech C920 Webcam is the most popular desktop webcam that provides excellent 1080p quality. It’s also well priced and easy to setup so you don’t have to spend so much to get the best quality in class for your videos. The camera also supports auto-focusing and H.264 which makes the video much smoother and crisp.

So there you have it, the most recommended equipment for streaming and capturing console gameplay from our team. With these tools, you can easily get started capturing your favourite games and sharing it with the world. For PC gamers, we have a special guide on capturing and sharing PC gameplay.
