A Journey Revisited
It’s hard to believe it’s been three whole years since Thatgamecompany released Journey on the PS3. Since 2012 the game has been praised highly for the stunning and emotional experience it delivered, becoming a cultural icon for what games could be – and now it’s out on the Playstation 4.
With the original being exclusive to the Playstation 3, a lot of people never got to experience Journey. Thanks to the huge sales of the Playstation 4 a lot of new players have joined Sony’s ranks, with this re-launch perfect for newcomers and anyone wanting to revisit the title. The new version features one major upgrade – 1080p, 60 frames per second visuals. Journey always looked stunning in the past, but now it looks and feels even better. That extra graphical output makes the whole experience fluid and natural, with sand shimmering as you run and slide across the dunes. It’s really a joy to relive.
As you move through the world of Journey Austin Wintory’s emotion packed score brings life to the ruins and dunes. Drifting alongside others who fade in and out through the game’s subtle multiplayer has a renewed beauty thanks to the memorable music, retaining the mood of the Playstation 3 version.
Ultimately, Journey is a game designed to be played in one sitting. It clocks in at around about two hours, but once you find yourself at the end it’s near impossible not to dive in to it all again. There’s not much more I can say without spoiling the crux of the title, following a masked and scarved being on their titular journey, but I promise you there’s a power rarely seen here – a power that’s made so many people fall in love with it already.
This is the quintessential way to experience a game I can confidently declare one of the best ever made. It’s stood the test of time well, returning now in 1080p, 60fps glory. If you’ve never played Journey I urge you to try it, and if you have this is the perfect excuse to play through it again. What Thatgamecompany have created in Journey is truly something special, and after their other titles I can’t wait to see what they create next.
Journey PS4 is available now digitally via the Playstation store. If you’ve purchased the PS3 version digitally in the past, the PS4 copy will be available to download for free.
