If you thought Sydney was the home of Australian esports with the amount of events hosted there, you might be wrong as the Victorian Government has announced that the city of Melbourne will host the inaugural Melbourne Esports Open. The multi-year deal which has been revealed by both the Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren and ESL Australia will bring esports to Melbourne Olympic Park on September 1 – 2, 2018.
“The Melbourne Esports Open is a massive scalp for Victoria, tapping into one of the world’s most popular sectors of the sports and entertainment industry.” – said Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren.
“We’re turning Melbourne Park into every gamers dream – giant screens, the best talent and latest technology.”
“With millions of gamers both at home and abroad, it’s time to bring all the action and fanfare of esports to our backyard.”
Melbourne Esports Open is set to feature games such as League of Legends, Overwatch and Fortnite according to the Herald Sun. With Riot Games teaming up with the AFL to bring esports to the stadium – Melbourne Esports Open could possibly play host to the OPL split two finals as the dates of the season line up.
