So we have another SSD unit on our test bench, this time a Plextor branded drive. The Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme is pretty much an upgraded version of the standard M5 Pro except they’ve chuck some industrial graded encryption and a 2.4 million hours MTBF into the mix. Also it’s apparently faster.
Inside the box you’ll get a 2.5 to 3.5″ converter which is always a bonus and the SSD itself is packed quite well in between a foam cutout. The SSD itself was quite simple housed in a brushed silver aluminum designed casing.
- Up to 540MB/s Random Read
- Up to 450MB/s Random Write
- 2.5″ Form Factor
- 256GB Capacity
- 2.4 Million Hours MTBF
Street Price: $259
For benchmarking the SSD, we use the popular AS SSD software. Easy to use and benchmarks about any drive in your computer, even mechanical ones. We pit the Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme against competitor, the OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD. For the benchmarks, bigger is better.
Sequential Read and Write Benchmark:
Straight up, you’ll notice that the Read speed for both the Plextor and OCZ are virtually on par so no real performance difference there. However the OCZ Vector is about 49MB/s faster in the Write department. Not a big amount of difference but this may sway your purchase as both drives are similarly priced.
With the sequential read almost on par, the OCZ Vector got away with a faster write speed. The 4K Random test proved the speeds even more with the OCZ Vector getting ahead in the Write department. As you can see above, the OCZ Vector took a 20MB/s lead against the Plextor M5.
While both drives received on par speeds in the Read department, it’s the OCZ Vector taking the lead when it comes to Write speeds. In theory though, it all comes down to the price and value of the SSD, speed can be one thing but price for storage has to be the most important. With the price roughly on par with the more faster OCZ, it seems highly logical on which side you’ll pick however the OCZ brand hasn’t had a good run over the last few years and may push people towards the Plextor.
We give the Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme 256GB SSD a Silver Award for great speeds at roughly $1/Per Gigabyte price.
