Team ICO’s latest title has been in development hell since its initial unveiling over six years ago, and it looks like the team has at least decided to move on from the name The Last Guardian by not having Sony follow up on renewing the trademark.

Team ICO’s Famito Ueda stated last December that the team has been “making progress under completely new conditions” and perhaps the abandoning of this trademark suggests that we’re likely to see a completely new IP from the team or The Last Guardian is being rebranded into something completely different.

Originally unveiled at Sony’s 2009 E3 Press Conference, The Last Guardian was supposed to release in late 2010 for the PlayStation 3 but fell into development limbo, with high profile members of Team ICO also leaving the studio during this time. Rumours circulate the internet on a regular basis about the goings-on of the project, growing especially feverish during the lead up to Sony’s annual E3 Press Conference.

We’re still waiting to see what happens with the game, or if we’ll even see it now, but this story has always been an intriguing one. Team ICO’s long-lost title might never see the light of day, and this could well be the nail in the coffin, but the gaming community will always remember the story of The Last Guardian – for better or for worse.
