Video games have come a long way since the original days of Pong on the Atari. Not only has the industry grown, but technology has allowed gaming to choose its own way of providing entertainment. At the forefront of gaming is narrative and character development, as they provide not only immersion, but connection with the players. 2014 brought forward new, wonderful characters to engage with – and as such a specific award was undoubtedly due.
Winner – Clementine, Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season Two
Not only is Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season Two an excellent second season of Telltale’s breakout hit, but Melissa Hutchinson’s reprisal of Clementine was both incredible and heartbreaking. Playing as Clementine was an experience many of us will never forget, and she rightfully deserves the award for Video Game Character of The Year.
2nd Place – Aurora, Child of Light
Taken off into a swift, enchanting world – Aurora is an incredible protagonist in Ubisoft’s wonderful Child of Light. Her dialogue throughout is wonderful and allowed gamers to connect with not only her purpose in finding a way back home, but understanding her thought process and decisions behind her actions. She’s the angel of darkness, the queen of light – and she rightfully earns 2nd place.
3rd Place – Monokuma, Danganronpa Series
The Danganronpa series has been very popular in the western market after it was brought over by NIS America. An intriguing story, superb gameplay and wonderfully written characters are all testaments to the series’ success, yet one character stands above – the lunatic fringe Monokuma. He’s crazy, insane and hell-bent on making your life a little bit worse, but he’s all the more lovable for it. He’s an awesome antagonist for the series and takes out third place.
